Significant Facts And Trends

  • National statistics indicate that one of every three females will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Additionally, one in four girls (25%) and one in six boys (16%) will be sexually abused before the age of 18.
  • Half of the victims seen at local rape exam sites are children.
  • Victims served by Rape Crisis and Victim Services have ranged in age from 11 days to 94 years.
  • Every 15 seconds a woman is battered in the United States.
  • Every 37 seconds a child is reported missing in the United States.
  • 30% of the women killed in the United States are killed by their husbands, ex-husbands or boyfriends. ·
  • Firearm-related injuries are the second leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 34.
  • Current waiting lists for victims seeking counseling at The Women's Center are two months for children and four months for adults.

Increasing Safety through
Prevention & Education

Through the "Play it Safe" prevention program, children ages four to 17 learn how to reduce their risk of sexual abuse and how to seek help if they are victimized. "Play It Safe" is provided in schools and other youth serving organizations.

Training and education programs are available to:

  • Teach adults how to recognize signs of child abuse and how to help child victims.
  • Teach adults how to reduce their own risk and how to help victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other traumatizing crimes.

Police, courts, hospitals and mental health professionals are trained and assisted in their work with victims.

Stabilizing Crisis 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Crisis counseling and support during rape exams is available for child and adult victims at three hospitals - John Peter Smith, Arlington Memorial, and Cook Children's Hospital.

Victims and concerned loved ones can call the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline for 24-hour crisis counseling.

Child and adult victims are accompanied and supported through police and court processes.

Professional assistance is available following community tragedies.
